About the event

Join us for a full day of beauty and discovery at Balboa Park Botanical Building and the Inez Grant Parker Memorial Rose Garden! This special event is limited to 40 members and includes two docent-led tours, each approximately one hour long, offering a unique behind-the-scenes experience of two of Balboa Park’s most beloved horticultural treasures. Each tour will have 20 members, then switching at the conclusion of each tour so members participate in both. Members can expect the program to wrap up approximately 12:30 PM

Botanical Building Tour

Step inside one of Balboa Park’s most iconic landmarks — recently and beautifully restored to its historic grandeur with updated pathways, lighting, and environmental enhancements. Nan Sterman, our speaker for our April meeting was the led designer for the renovation. The Botanical Building is one of the largest wood-lath structures in the world and houses an extraordinary collection of tropical and subtropical plants, including cycads, ferns, orchids, and palms. This docent led visit offers a wonderful opportunity to experience the space up close.

Rose Garden Tour

Take an informational stroll through the world-renowned Inez Grant Parker Memorial Rose Garden, a fragrant and colorful oasis containing thousands of rose bushes in more than 130 varieties. Recognized nationally and internationally for its excellence and beauty, this garden is a favorite spot for rose lovers and casual visitors alike, especially in peak bloom. During our docent-led tour, members will learn about the rich history of the garden, how it earned its distinguished reputation, and what it takes to maintain such an extensive rose collection year-round.
