Rancho Santa Fe Garden Club
History
The Rancho Santa Fe Garden Club was founded in 1926 by a small group of families. The purpose was to advance the gardening and landscaping of the Ranch, then just three years old! An anonymous donor contributed funds to build a clubhouse. Lilian Rice, the noted local architect, designed and supervised its construction. The Club was incorporated as a non-profit, public benefit corporation in 1937. Throughout WW II, the building was used as local headquarters for a number of war agencies, and was designated a civilian casualty center. A cooperative program with the Rancho Santa Fe Association began in 1957 with the over-all beautification of roadside plantings, the landscaping of the school, the golf club, and the post office. In 1971, the Articles of Incorporation were revised to broaden the scope and purposes of the Club which are reflected in our mission statement. The present site was gifted in 1974. After much cooperative work, planning, and the generous donations of the members, the present clubhouse was dedicated in 1975. Today, the Club's members continue the ideals and untiring work of the Rancho Santa Fe Garden Club for the betterment of the community! | The Club graciously hosts some of the most important civic events of the community.
The Philanthropy Program of the Club donates to horticultural, educational, and community service agencies. It provides support to those organizations whose purpose is to preserve, display, and conduct research into various aspects of horticulture. The Program also provides annual scholarships to students who are pursuing courses of study in the fields of Horticulture, Botany, and Environmental Science. The Club hosts musical concerts and performances throughout the year; and co-sponsors, with Cal State San Marcos, college level courses with their Lifelong Learning Institute. Scripps Hospital also conducts many seminars on health and well being at the club and thousands of children have attended Cotillion at the Garden Club for many years. The Rancho Santa Fe Garden Club
